WEAKEST FLEET LINE MODEL

UNIQUE SPECIALIZED MODEL

The WFL model helps to see flights in their context and to make the right evaluation of fleet & crew costs.

It optimizes fleet rotations from an economic perspective, indicating new priorities for optimization.

This model provides exceptional insight in the profitability of the production and thus forms an ideal inroad for improvement ideas.

  • Flight profitability in the schedule context
  • Sharp evaluation of fixed fleet costs
  • Improvement options directly visible
  • Detect sub-optimizations of flights or aircraft
  • Define the optimal fleet size

THE BENEFITS OF WFL

WFL sorts the flights by network value, allocating them to aircraft in such way that the fleet lines are sorted by the joint value of all flights on it.

So the top line will contain the set of flights that have the highest joint value.

Similarly, the bottom line will contain the set of flights that have the lowest joint value.

Thus, WFL provides a wealth of information for network optimization:

VALUE OF FLIGHTS

WFL directly reveals which flights stand in the way of better network profits.

The big eye-opener to many is that the strongest flight in the network can be on the weakest line. In that case the schedules are sub-optimized in favor of that flight, while it's not the best for company profits.

Similarly, the weakest flight of the network can be on the strongest line. For instance because there are no better alternatives at that particular point in time.

ALTERNATIVE PLANNING OPTIONS

By showing the flights in fleet rotations, planners can immediately detect whether the planning can be optimized by re-scheduling flights.

It is also clearly visible whether replacing certain flights by flights on other routes is a feasible solution.

FIXED COST TRADE-OFFS

The complexities of network profitability calculations mostly obstruct a clear sight on fixed costs.

An allocation based on blockhours or on elapsed time is highly artificial, while judging flights on contribution isn't satisfactory either.

WFL provides crystal clear answers to these questions.

SELECT ROUTES

WFL is also used in new seasonal planning as tool to select the best set of possible flights.

All options can be entered and WFL will pick the best overall production package.

This is also interesting for charter companies, during negotiations on seasonal series. WFL will sharply trade-off series lengths, yields, and departure times.

OPTIMAL FLEET SIZE

WFL helps to determine the optimal number of aircraft units of each type.

It will clearly identify the margin of the weakest fleet lines, showing exactly which aircraft are still profitable and which are not.

In a situation where you consider grounding fleet to save costs, WFL will tell you whether that will help and, if so, which set of flights needs to be cancelled in order to create the largest benefit.
